Sunday mutts

We’re in the dog days of summer (click here for some history on that phrase), which are not my favorites. It’s not because I’m a cat person rather than a dog person, but because they tend to be really hot, and we know I was not made for summer.

But today is a very special dog day: National Mutt Day. Mutts are really my favorite dog (if we’re going for purebred, Siberian Husky, but I’m not much of a fan of the problems that come with purebred animals). Heinz 57 dogs in my experience seem to be hardier. My favorite was my parents’ dog Pepper, who in her mishmash of doggy DNA had to have had a healthy serving of border collie. She was floofy, sweet, smart and a lover of noogies (my fault). Today, let’s hail all the Peppers in our lives … and maybe hand out a few noogies and treats.

Cats can be mutts too. Luke was at least half Turkish Angora, I believe, and who knows what else. He was also part angel and part demon, which made his nickname of Lucifer rather appropriate. Image found on cheezburger.

But I’m cute, and that’s all that matters, right? Image found on reddit.
Introducing the Chusky (part Chow Chow, part Husky). I don’t know whether to be overwhelmed by the cuteness or a little afraid of what has been wrought. With the Pomsky (Pomeranian-Husky), it’s just all cuteness. Image found on Bored Panda.

Here’s what I think of non-mutt-lovers! Phooey on them all! Image found on K9 of Mine.
Pepper apparently really loved my dad’s shoes. Image found on cheezburger.
But of course you’re a good boy! You’re the goodest boy! Image found on Reader’s Digest Canada.
You knew a cat would sneak in here, didn’t you? Image found on cheezburger.

  1. I like the cartoon of a sheep ranch, where the sheep dog has just brought in the herd and says to the farmer: “Here’s all forty.” The farmer exclaims, “But we only have 38 sheep.” The dog, responds “I rounded them up.”

  2. My recently departed Josie (aka Josiedammit) was part poodle and lhasa apso. My daughter referred to Josie as a lazzapoo. I didn’t see much poodle in Josie, but she was a rescue from Petfinder. My home was at least her third. She had 15 good years of her 17 with me and my kids, and of course Charlie the Cat. Here’s to our mutts!
